Aplicaciones Tecnicas de la Energia SA (ATERSA, Spain) will be installing solar-electric systems in 227 rural villages in Senegal, Africa. ATERSA will design and supply turnkey systems under the country's rural development program, which will total an installed capacity of 425kW using modules from AstroPower Inc. (Newark, DE). The contract is worth Euro 7.5 million and should be finished next year.

The photovoltaic (PV) systems will power social centers, schools, health facilities and religious centers, as well as 10 to 12 streetlights in each village. Each system will include four 85W PV modules, inverters, batteries and dc fluorescent lighting.
