Astec Power Debuts APC08 DC/DC Converter

April 17, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Astec Power (Carlsbad, CA) introduced its first 25W point-of-load (POL) dc/dc converter, the APC08. At 126W per cubic inch, the 3.3V model of the APC08 product family delivers a full 8A of regulated power to its load, at 89 percent efficiency. Housed in an industry-standard, surface-mount device package and occupying only one-fifth of a cubic inch, the 0.33in tall APC08 is sized to fit demanding space requirements. The APC08 is suitable for data and telecommunications applications, including wireless transmitters, receivers, base stations, instrumentation, and Internet-working devices such as hubs and routers.

The APC08 family includes six different output-voltage models of 0.9V, 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V, with the 0.9V model delivering 9.5A to the load. The APC08 features wide input and output-voltage ranges of 1.8Vin to 13Vin and 0.9Vout to 3.6Vout, output-voltage adjustability, active current sharing between paralleled units, output-status indication capabilities, a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C, and a size of 0.53in x 1.3in x 0.33in. Additionally, every unit has built-in over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection with auto-recovery of any protective shutdown once the fault is removed.

Priced from $11.99 in 1,000-piece quantities, samples of the 3.3V model are
