Artesyn Launches SXE15, SXN15 and CXE15 Series DC/DC Converters

November 27, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies (Boca Raton, FL) recently extended its range of dc/dc converters with the launch of a new portfolio of high-efficiency 15W modules. The company is introducing three new product families, comprising 16 different models, all of which are aimed at the emergent market for powering low-voltage silicon.

All of these new low-voltage dc/dc converters employ synchronous rectification to provide output current levels of up to 6A. The converters are primarily intended for the networking, telecom and wireless markets, though they are also suitable for general industrial electronics applications.

Two of the new dc/dc converter families, the SXE15 and SXN15 Series, are designed for surface mounting. The third family, called the CXE15 Series, is geared towards plated-through hole mounting. All three families feature a 33V to 75V input, making them suited for use in systems employing 48 distributed power architectures, and are available with single outputs of 5V at 3A, 3.3V at 4.5A, 2.5V at 6A or 1.8V at 4.5A. The two surface-mount families are also available with dual outputs of 5V at 3A and 3.3V at 4.5A or 3.3V at 3.5A and 2.5V at 4.5A. All of the converters are rated for use in ambient temperature of up to 70 degrees C without the need for forced air or heatsinks.

The SXE15 and SXN15 families of dc/dc converters are packaged as 0.33-inch components with a length of 1.9 inches, suitable for use with automated placement equipment. The SXE15 Series converters use a standard SMT leadframe with gull-wing connections and have a width of 1.15 inches, while the SXN Series is packaged in a narrow width form measure 1.0 inch across. The SXN Series fits within the industry-standard 2 inch x 1 inch PTH footprint.

Artesyn's SXE15, SXN15 and CXE15 Series converters all offer remote on/off facilities, plus or minus ten percent output adjust capabilities, non-latching clamping over-voltage protection, brick wall current limit and full, continuous short-circuit protection. They feature international safety approval as well, including EN60950 and UL1950.

According to Frank Keane, Artesyn's director of dc/dc marketing, "The market for low-voltage, high-efficiency dc/dc converters is set to grow significantly, fuelled in particular by the move towards low-voltage silicon in communications and networking systems that use distributed power architectures. Our new SXE15, SXN15 and CXE15 Series converters are specifically targeted at designers seeking a fast, low-risk entry into latest-generation technology. The converters all share the same innovative conversion technology and have 90 percent component commonality. This simplifies component sourcing and enables Artesyn to deliver quantity products on time and on-budget."
