Artesyn Launches New IBC25A Eighth-Brick Converter

March 13, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL) launched a new eighth-brick intermediate bus converter (IBC) with a 300 W output capability, the IBC25A fixed-ratio dc transformer model, which generates an isolated, unregulated 12 V/25 A output with a high full-load efficiency of 96%. In addition, Artesyn is introducing two eighth-brick IBCs with semi-regulated outputs, featuring input-voltage ranges optimized for telecom and computing applications.

Forming the latest additions to Artesyn’s Typhoon™ family of board-mounted dc-dc converters, the second-generation IBCs are targeted at the telecommunications, networking, computing and industrial electronics markets. They are intended for powering multiple downstream, non-isolated, point-of-load (POL) converters in distributed power systems with 12 V intermediate bus architectures. All three eighth-brick IBCs use an advanced full-bridge conversion topology, with a promary side microprocessor supervising the PWM controller to maximize performance.

Capable of generating 23% more useable output power, with an unprecedented power density in excess of 362 W/in³, the fixed-ratio model has an input range of 42 Vdc to 53 Vdc; generates an isolated, unregulated 12 V output; and is capable of delivering up to 25 A. Line regulation is specified at +10% and -12.5% over the range of input voltages, and load regulation is maintained to within ±1.5% for all load currents within the range 0 A to 25 A.

The eighth-brick IBCs offer a wide industry-standard 36 Vdc to 75 Vdc input; a narrow 48 Vdc ±10% input; an isolated 12 Vdc output; delivery of up to 17 A (wide-input version) and 20 A (narrow-input version); a set point accuracy of ±0.25%; line and load regulation to within ±0.3% and ±1.5%, respectively; an industry-standard pin-out and 0.9 in x 2.3 in footprint; an installed height of 0.40 in; operation over a wide ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C without a heatsink; over-temperature and over-current protection; under-voltage lockout and non-latching over-voltage protection; an input transient rating of 100 V for 100 ms; a fixed 600 kHz switching frequency; and 1,500 Vdc basic insulation.

The new Typhoon eighth-brick IBCs are available for immediate delivery. In OEM quantities of 1,000, unit prices are $39.95 for the 25 A fixed-ratio model, $45.00 for the 20 A narrow-input model and $49.00 for the wide-input 17 A model. Standard lead time on all three products is stock to 8 to 10 weeks ARO.
