Apex Microtechnology Introduces the PA34 and PA35 Power Amplifiers

August 15, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Apex Microtechnology Corp. introduced the new PA34 and PA35 monolithic 1.7A power amplifier that is configured with a voltage follower, enabling it to generate up to 3.4A output current.

Housed in a very small, industry-standard TO-220 package, the device operates via 5V to 40V single supply, and ±2.5V to ±20V split supplies. The power amplifier features an extended common-mode range that includes the negative rail (ground), which facilitates single supply applications.

The PA34 amplifier provides the same monolithic die as the PA35 in a TO-220 package. This device is internally configured as a 2.5A power amplifier with current sense and VBOOST. The latter features are not available in the PA35 due to pin constraints.

Both the PA34 and PA35 offer high efficiency, resulting from a high-output swing that drives within 2.8V and 1.4V of supply, respectively. Both operate off total supply voltages as low as 5V, making them suitable for employment as high-current drivers for single-supply, 12V and 28V motor applications. The two devices also feature internal current-limit circuitry for protection on the output stage.
