Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors Extended to 500V and Life Increased to 5000hrs

January 22, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has extended the maximum voltage rating of the Vishay BCcomponents 500 PGP-ST series of aluminum screw-terminal capacitors to 500 V. At the same time, the company more than doubled its useful life to 5000 hours at +85 °C.

The 500 PGP-ST series devices are polarized aluminum electrolytic capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte and Vishay optimized them for dc-linking in power conversion electronics rated at 20kW and above, including UPS systems, large motor drives, and solar inverters.

Simply upgrading the dc-link capacitors and enabling solar inverter systems to be upgraded for 1000V maximum input increases the voltage headroom in these applications, while allowing three-phase, 380V designs to be re-used in 480V systems. The capacitors are available with voltages of 350V, 400V, 420V, 450V, and 500V. The minimum capacitances of the devices is 1500µF, 1000µF, 1000µF, 1000µF, and 680µF respectively. The maximum capacitance is 22000µF, 18000µF, 15000µF, 15000µF, and 12000µF respectively.

The 500 PGP-ST series comes in nine case sizes with measurements ranging from 50mm by 80mm to 90mm by 220mm. The high-efficiency devices feature capacitance ratings from 680 µF to 22 000 µF over a voltage range from 350V to 500V. The capacitors have a cylindrical aluminum case insulated with a blue sleeve and feature pressure relief in their sealing disc.

The RoHS-compliant devices come with 8 mm terminals on the standard high post M5 disc, or 13 mm terminals featuring the high current M6 disc.
