Allegro Releases Two New Motor Drivers

October 03, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Allegro announced the release of two new microstepping motor drivers – the A3992 and A3987.

The A3992 is a complete microstepping motor driver with serial interface and outputs rated at ±1.5A and 50V. The A3992SB-T has the same pin out and serial port control as the A3972SB-T so it can drop in to most of the A3972 applications. By switching to the A3992, customers receive overcurrent protection and the option to switch to a thermally efficient surface-mount version, A3992SLP-T. Targeted at the office automation and industrial markets, Allegro's A3992 solution offers several key features that include: over-current protection (OCP), synchronous rectification for low power dissipation, patented programmable mixed, fast and slow current decay modes and low on resistance DMOS outputs in a thermally efficient surface mount package.

The A3987 is a complete PWM microstepping motor driver with built-in translator and output ratings of 50V and 1.5A. It is designed to operate bipolar stepper motors in full-, half-, quarter- and sixteenth-step modes. It combines an easy-to-use STEP and DIRECTION interface with a small eTSSOP package, efficient high current output, high-resolution microstepping control and overcurrent protection (OCP). The A3987 is part of the family of stepper motor drivers that includes the A3967, A3977, A3979, A3980, A3982, A3983 and A3984. Its higher voltage rating extends the family into applications that require 50V. The A3987 is targeted at the office automation and industrial markets.

Allegro's A3992 is supplied in a low profile (1.1mm) 24L eTSSOP with exposed power tab and a 24-lead plastic DIP with a copper batwing tab (suffix 'B'). The power tab is at ground potential and needs no electrical isolation. The A3992SLP-T is priced at $2.36 in quantities of 5,000 and has a 12-week typical lead-time to market.
