Alcatel Presents AM 20 SI Series Converters

December 02, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Alcatel Converters (Lannion, France) extended its standard module range with a new family of open-frame, low-profile, dc/dc converters, the AM 20 SI Series of high-performance converters, which come in an industry-standard footprint of 2in x 2in and the new 2in x 1.6in footprint.

The 2in x 1.6in version supplies up to 24W of output power and the 2in x 2in version supplies up to 20W. Both footprints have a low profile of only 0.39in (10mm) enabling denser packing of circuits within the user systems, increasing system functionality or reducing overall equipment size.

The converters use Alcatel-patented technologies with efficiencies of 90 percent for the 2in x 2in version, and 91 percent for the 2in x 1.6in version, resulting in a power density of 19.2W per cubic inch.

The 2in x 1.6in device is initially offered with output voltages of 12V or 5V, while the 2in x 2in footprint delivers a higher output current of 8A with output voltages of 3.3V, 2.5V or 1.8V. The devices are suitable for a range of applications, including telecom and industrial equipment. They draw power from a 48V nominal input and feature standard overload protection in the event of a short-circuit or system overload.

The single-output dc/dc converters are available with an input range of 36Vdc to 75Vdc, and weigh only 24g (2in x 1.6in) and 30g (2in x 2in). They have industry-standard pin-out and a voltage accuracy of one percent at full load over an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C.

Options include remote on/off and output-voltage adjust. The AM20 SI Series is fully compliant with EN 60950 and is UL 60950 third-edition recognized.
