GaN-Based AEC-Q100 6.7kW On-Board-Charger Ref Design

March 19, 2019 by Scott McMahan

VisIC Technologies, Ltd announced the availability of its On-Board-Charger (OBC) reference design for the fast-growing EV market. The 6.7kW OBC features a size of 2.3L and weighs 4.5kg, providing close to 3kW/L power density and proving the disruptive capability of GaN switches.

The company contends that this OBC charger offers 3 x better power density compared to commercially available products. With an efficiency above 96% across a wide load range, Visic says it helps automotive manufacturers reduce power losses and enables faster charging for electric car owners.

The 6.7kW OBC with VisIC GaN power components targets plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles (PHEV/EV).

A universal 110V to 220V/16A to 32A ac input and a 200V to 430V dc output for charging the automotive batteries control the voltage and current flow to the battery. VisIC designed the charger to provide the interfaces to charging standards on the input power side, thereby adapting to charging infrastructure.

VisIC designed the OBC, which utilizes the company's GaN technology, for automotive qualification requirements AEC-Q101.

According to VisIC, the design demonstrates a reduction in power losses and reduces size and weight. Advantages of the charger include simplifying the cooling systems, reducing the charging time, and reducing the size and cost of the EV.

"We are happy to release this OBC reference-design to help our customers to accelerate the design cycle and bring the best-in-class xEV chargers using VisIC's GaN technology to the market in a fast and efficient way," says Ran Soffer, VisIC's SVP Sales & Marketing. "This reference design proves the benefits and improvements VisIC's GaN technology can bring to the xEV users. With VisIC's GaN technology, electrical cars will be more efficient, lighter in weight and more affordable."
