Advanced Power Conversion Debuts APC 500 Series

April 03, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Advanced Power Conversion plc (Farnborough, England) announced the launch of the ground-breaking APC 500 Series dc/dc converter, which features a full-load efficiency of over 90 percent for 500W in the industry-standard full-brick size (116.8mm x 61.0mm x 12.7mm).

The new converter uses integrated magnetics, a full H-bridge transformer with soft switching, and a current-doubler rectifier. The topology supplies continuous input and output current without additional filtering and can be produced in volume. With a power density of 5.53W/cu-cm (90W/cu-in), the APC500 also employs a fixed-frequency operation of 300KHz that can be synchronized to an external clock for noise-sensitive circuits and helps with the design of EMC filters.

The APC500 includes a brick-wall output-current limit with a fold-back output-current limit for short circuits, hot-plug capability, remote sensing, remote shutdown and a single-wire connection for parallel operation. The APC500 also features a range of built-in protection features incorporating over-voltage and short-circuit protection. Additionally, the APC-F501 includes unique functions such as a thermal monitoring voltage, which can provide early warning of system fault.
