Active Power Reaches Milestone in Continuous Power System Development

Active Power (Austin, TX) announced that it has successfully operated a critical subsystem of its telecom continuous power system (CPS). Using a fully integrated flywheel/motor-generator/turbine rotor that weighs less than 25 pounds, the Active Power CPS will be capable of delivering 6kW of backup power for eight hours. Target applications for this product include backup power for wireless base stations, remote switching centers, and broadband communications such as fiber-to-cable and DSL distribution.

"By achieving this first milestone in our telecom CPS product development, we have demonstrated that we are on schedule

with this program," said Joe Pinkerton, CEO of Active Power. "This low-power telecom CPS product will extend our product

line into the high-growth telecom market and complement our current high-power strategy, which targets the rapidly growing

web-hosting market."

Active Power's telecom CPS product is slated for full prototype operation in the first quarter of 2001, with production

shipments scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2001. Pricing for this 48kWh solution is targeted to be under $15,000, or less than $300 per kWh. The company expects to have a major distribution partnership agreement in place by the second quarter of 2001.
