AC Propulsion Debuts AC-150 Drivetrain

January 22, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

AC Propulsion Inc. (San Dimas, CA) introduced its new second-generation AC-150 drivetrain. The new system retains the original's 150kW (200HP) rating, but has fewer parts, is 30 percent smaller, 8lbs lighter and packages more functions inside the electronics enclosure than the original AC-150 drive system. The new AC-150 features a 20kW bi-directional grid power interface, which serves as a high-power battery charger for battery-electric vehicles, as well as providing distributed generation uninterruptible backup power to homes or businesses.

The AC-150 drive system delivers up to 150kW (200HP) motor output, yet maximizes vehicle operating range with high efficiency over a broad operating range and comprehensive energy recovery through traction-controlled regenerative braking. The copper-rotor induction motor weighs 50kg, including its cooling system and produces 225N-m (165ft-lb) of torque from 0rpm to 5,000rpm. The power electronics unit weighs 30kg, including its cooling system, and houses the traction motor inverter, a 20kW bi-directional charger/grid interface, and a 100A, 13.5V accessory power supply.

The AC-150 reductive charging system can be plugged into standard 120V, 208V or 240V outlets, and is compatible with existing Level 2 conductive recharge stations, or with the new Level 2+ high-power recharge stations for up to 20kW of recharge power. The Gen II AC-150 drive system is in pilot production and is now available.
