800V Optocouplers with Phototriac Output and 1000V/μs Static dV/dt Rating

May 21, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. released two new series of optocouplers with phototriac output in compact SMD-4 and DIP-4 packages. With a high 800V off-state voltage and dV/dt of 1000V/μs, Vishay Semiconductors' highly robust VOT8024A and VOT8121A series provide noise isolation for industrial equipment and home appliances.

Typical applications for the optocouplers include power TRIAC drivers in solid-state relays, thermostats, boilers, three-phase air conditioners, power line switching, industrial motor control, as well as motor, lamp and valve control in household appliances.

The two series of optocouplers isolate low voltage logic from 120Vac, 240Vac, and 380Vac lines to handle resistive, inductive, or capacitive loads, including high current thyristors, solenoids, motors, or TRIACs and relays.

With reduced design costs and board space requirements, the devices optically couple a GaAs infrared LED to either a random-phase TRIAC (VOT8121A series) to enable phase-independent switching or a zero-crossing TRIAC (VOT8024A series) for EMI reduction without requiring external snubber networks.

The high, off-state voltages of both the series improve safety margins in one-phase applications while preserving sufficient voltage headroom for three-phase applications.

For added safety, the optocouplers feature a withstanding isolation voltage of 5000VRMS. Low trigger currents of 5mA for the VOT8024A series and 10mA for the VOT8121A series facilitate the interface with digital logic.
