3-Axis Acceleration Sensor with Preset Functionalities for Industrial Systems

August 15, 2019 by Paul Shepard

Würth Elektronik has expanded its sensor program with a compact, versatile 3-axis acceleration sensor. The WSEN-ITDS sensor, which measures only 2.0 × 2.0 × 0.7 mm and is offered in an LGA package, uses a MEMS-based capacitive measuring principle. Thanks to an integrated temperature sensor, the sensor outputs calibrate data directly.

Four measuring ranges are available for selection: ±2, ±4, ±8 or ±16 g. Register settings can be used to select the application-specific functionalities for free fall, wake-up, tap, activity, motion and orientation detection.

The acceleration sensor can be used in a variety of ways: for example, high-resolution with up to 1,600Hz output data rate for vibration monitoring, such as in the predictive maintenance of machines, or in low-power mode for recording a single pulse when a switch is touched, for instance. In this case, the energy-saving sensor can even be operated with energy harvesting.

The ability to use integrated algorithms to prepare the measured data for application cases makes application development far easier. The WSEN-ITDS is specified for a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C and is therefore extremely suitable for industrial applications, such as decentralized measurement data acquisition in IoT networks.

Summary of features and specifications:

  • MEMS based capacitive sensing principle
  • 14-bit output resolution
  • Full scale ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, ±16g
  • Bandwidth up to 400Hz
  • 32 level FIFO buffer
  • Embedded temperature sensor
  • I²C digital communication interface
  • Application specific functionalities: Free-fall, wake-up, tap, activity, motion and orientation detection
  • Temperature range: -40°C up to +85°C

Würth Elektronik offers developers intensive design-in consultation. In contrast to prevailing market practices, the sensors can be ordered from stock without a minimum order quantity.

Würth Elektronik offers an evaluation board (pictured at the top of this article) for the sensor. The evaluation board for the acceleration sensor provides the opportunity to verify the sensor performance. In addition, the board assists fast prototyping. It can directly connected to the Amber Pi Design Kit or can be placed on a bread board.
