3.3µF to 680µF Polymer Tantalum Molded Chip Capacitors Now in Z Case

February 06, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. reported that the company has added to its T55 series of vPolyTan™ surface-mount polymer tantalum molded chip capacitors. The new devices come in the Z case (EIA 7343-19) size.

Applications for the new capacitors include decoupling; smoothing; filtering; bulk energy storage in wireless cards; infrastructure equipment; storage and networking; computer motherboards; as well as smartphones and tablets.

The company points out that Tantalum electrolytic capacitors are the preferred choice in applications that require volumetric efficiency, stable electrical parameters, high reliability, and long service life. In fact, according to the company, tantalum capacitors tend to have as much as three times better capacitance per volume efficiency than aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

The additions to the vPolyTan capacitor series have a 0.1 mm lower height than capacitors in the standard V case (EIA 7343-20), thereby allowing increase package density and enabling the design of thinner end products. Vishay optimized the capacitors for power management, battery decoupling, and energy storage in solid state drives, computers, servers, network infrastructure equipment, and wireless transceivers.

Offered in the compact J, P, A, B, T (low-profile B — 1.2mm max.), D, V, and Z case sizes, the T55 series features a wide capacitance range from 3.3µF to 680µF with over-voltage ratings from 2.5V to 63V and capacitance tolerance of ± 20%. The capacitors offer ultra-low ESR from 500mΩ down to 7mΩ at +25 °C, a result of their polymer cathodes, which deliver vastly enhanced performance over manganese dioxide devices. Capacitance values up to 1000µF and ESR values down to 6mΩ are in development.

Operating over a temperature range of -55 °C to +105 °C, the capacitors provide excellent ripple current rating of up to 5.66A IRMS and have low internal resistance for enhanced charge and discharge characteristics. The T55 series featuring lead (Pb)-free terminations, is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green. The devices are compatible with high-volume, automatic pick-and-place equipment and have a Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) of 3.
