50A/100W High-Density, Non-Isolated Digital DC-DC for 5G Nodes

February 20, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Artesyn Embedded Technologies announced the LGA50D dc-dc module, which boasts one of the highest current density ratings in the industry. With a footprint of just 25.4mm x 12.5mm (1 inch x 0.5 inch), this non-isolated unit offers two independent and configurable 25A, 50W outputs, which can also be combined to a single configurable 50A, 100W output. Up to 4 units can be connected in parallel so that up to 200 amps can be supplied as a single power rail.

A variant that is 6mm (0.23 inch) high is suitable for height-constrained applications, such as compact 5G wireless network nodes. Applications such as graphics, data or video processing, using high-power devices, such as server processors, FPGAs, supercomputers, network, storage, and telecom equipment, can also benefit from the current density, efficiency, and control flexibility of Artesyn's LGA50D digital dc-dc converter.

The input voltage and output voltage specifications remain the same in any configuration. So, the input is defined as 7.5V to 14V, and the output voltage can always be adjusted within the range of 0.6V to 5.2V. Therefore, Artesyn's LGA50D digital dc-dc converter can support a broad range of semiconductor devices and applications including both analog control and digital control functions. This support lets design engineers control units with resistors or control and monitor the converter modules using the industry-standard PMBus digital interface.

LGA50D Evaluation Kit

For simple evaluation, configuration and monitoring, Artesyn offers a PC-based graphical software package in conjunction with an evaluation kit. Two intuitive tabs allow developers to enter the required settings for individual converters and monitor the status and parameters. The demonstration board is fitted with two LGA50D modules allowing design engineers to test independent-channel or stacked-module operation.

Artesyn's LGA50D evaluation kit gives you the ability to connect the demonstration board to a USB socket on a PC, with the PMbus interface, dongle, and cable provided in the kit and control and monitor the LGA50D units as they would be used in an application.

Hardware functions on the demonstration board allow you to enable and select an output voltage by simple dip-switch settings, and the board provides voltage and ripple measurement points.

The connections to the evaluation board are via M6 screws, with the only requirement being that the input voltage is in the 7.5V to 14V range. The output connections use the same M6 screws. However, if you want to connect the outputs in parallel or to stack the modules, they are placed to make putting a link between them as easy as possible.

Artesyn offers 2 variants of the LGA50D demo-board, one for the standard height profile unit, the other for the low-profile version.

Artesyn's new LGA50D series dc-dc modules are compatible with the company's 80A LGA80D series, giving equipment makers scalability with a common fit, form, and function at different power and current ranges.
