Networked Servo Drives with Motion Controller plus Multi-Protocol Ethernet

July 16, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Nidec Control Techniques has added three new products to its motion control portfolio. These new products include an Ethernet-onboard model of its latest generation Digitax HD servo drive range for easy integration with Siemens and Rockwell PLCs, a dc bus connected capacitor share module for increased system flexibility, and Active Front End (AFE) kits for enhanced energy efficiency.

Digitax M750 Ethernet-enabled automation drive

The new Digitax M750 is a network servo drive that supports Modbus TCP, Profinet RT, and Ethernet/IP on the same onboard Ethernet switch, allowing easy integration of its high-performance motor control in any automation ecosystem. (See image above).

Digitax HD M750, like other members of the Digitax HD servo series can be used standalone and the company says it is also fast and easy to set up as a modular system.

Digitax HD M750 is a network servo drive for centralized and decentralized motion applications. It allows up to 300% peak overload and features 62µs current loop and 16kHz switching frequency.

The device has an on-board motion controller for distributed 1.5 axis motion and synchronized peer-to-peer communication over the Ethernet.

With ratings between 0.7Nm-51Nm with 153Nm peak, and from 1.5A to16A with 48A peak, the minimum size is also an important benefit. The drive is 40mm wide with five drives fitting within the footprint of an A4 sheet of paper.

The servo drive features multi-protocol Ethernet ports that enable support of real-time Ethernet with RTMoE (Real-Time Motion over Ethernet). Additional protocol support includes PROFINET RT, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP or PROFINET RT used with PLC Controlled Motion for centralized controllers.

The new Digitax HD M750 Ethernet servo drive also hosts the on-board Advanced Motion Controller for distributed 1.5 axis motion control.

Open, efficient, synchronized Ethernet

Maximize machine productivity through high-performance deterministic Ethernet. Ethernet webpages are hosted onboard the M750 Ethernet drive.

Digitax HD's standard Ethernet also supports RTMoE (Real-Time Motion over Ethernet) which provides synchronized communication between drives with the Precision Time Protocol as defined by IEEE1588 V2. Distributed clocks are utilized to automatically synchronize the speed, position, and current loops across all drives.

Due to the company's unique design, an increase in drive size is only needed when option modules are used, achieving significant space-saving.

  • Up to 16kHz switching frequency (default ratings specified at 8kHz)
  • Supports a wide range of feedback technologies including EnDat 2.2, Hiperface SinCos, Incremental Quadrature, SinCos, BiSS-C, SSI, Resolvers, and others.
  • Maximum performance package with high torque density, low inertia Unimotor HD servo motors

RTMoE

Supports RTMoE (Real-Time Motion over Ethernet) which provides synchronized communication between drives using the Precision Time Protocol as defined by IEEE1588 V2:

  • Distributed clocks are used to automatically synchronize the position, speed and current loops across all drives
  • 1ms cycle time for synchronous cyclic data
  • High-speed network synchronization of less than 1μs jitter (typically (typically <200ns) and 1 ms cycle time for synchronous cyclic data
  • Multi-protocol Ethernet support of EtherNet/IP or PROFINET RT in addition to Modbus TCP/IP, HTTP and SMTP

Advanced 1.5 axes Motion Controller, key features include:

  • 250μs cycle time
  • Motion profile generator
  • Electronic gearbox
  • Interpolated cam
  • Homing functions
  • High-speed position freeze

Minimum size

  • The Digitax HD M750 has a 1.6in (40mm) width, and the option bracket is 0.86in (22mm). So, the intelligent servo drive provides a competitive maximum width of 2.44in (62mm).
  • Reduce cabinet height by directly stacking rows of drives. Patented Ultraflow™ technology expels heat directly outside of the cabinet through the rear of the drive (drive heat dissipation can also be achieved via vents on the top of the drive, as standard).
  • Fits into cabinets just 8in (200mm) deep

Easy installation and setup

  • DIN rail alignment
  • Kits for easy multi-axis installation
  • Single motor cable and electronic motor nameplate for fast set up

New M75C CapShare capacitor module

M75C capacitor module

The Digitax HD series is highly flexible in its configuration and can operate both standalone or as part of a modular common dc bus system. The multi-axis capabilities have been greatly enhanced through a new bus connected capacitor module which can be used in several ways.

Active Front End (AFE) kits

AFE kits are now available to provide additional filtering that enables an M750 drive to operate as a power supply/regen module to generate a dc bus and return excess mechanical energy to the mains power supply.

The AFE module can be connected to either a single-motoring axis or a multi-axis dc bus connected system. The primary benefits are reduced energy consumption and reduced power supply harmonics.
