UTC PC25 Fuel Cell Unveiled in South Windsor School

October 27, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

A PC25 fuel cell, manufactured and installed by UTC Fuel Cells (South Windsor, CT), a division of United Technologies Corp. (South Windsor, CT), was unveiled at a ceremony held at South Windsor High School, marking the launch of the state's first municipal facility to be powered and heated by a fuel cell. The South Windsor High School will also serve as a regional emergency shelter. In addition to providing heat and electricity to the high school, UTC intends to utilize the project as an international demonstration site for fuel cell technology.

The fuel cell installation was made possible by a funding program through the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), which is administered by Connecticut Innovations, the state's high-technology investment arm. The CCEF committed $2.3 million to fund the program, including the purchase and installation of the fuel cell at the high school. The PC25 generates 200kW of electricity and provides more than 900,000 Btus of heat per hour that can be used for space heating, domestic hot water heating, or absorption chilling and air conditioning.
