May 03, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Corp. (Menlo Park, CA) announced the introduction of its MAC300 PolySwitch resettable fuse from its Raychem Circuit Protection division. The new MAC300 device is custom-designed for the new AAAA NiMH cells. Tyco reports that pack protection is provided by incorporating the MAC300 device in a molded cap combined with cell interconnect, which is welded to one of the cell buttons. The device limits current in the event of a fault such as accidental shorting or abusive charging. The device hold current is 3.0A at 25 degrees C, with a typical initial resistance of 24mOhms and a voltage withstand of 8V.

“Space restriction in portable electronics have driven the development of the AAAA cell, and Raychem Circuit Protection has developed a custom part specifically for the protection of this exciting new form factor," commented Frank Owen, marketing director for Raychem Circuit Protection. “The MAC300 device has been designed to meet the emerging requirements of this market."

Samples of the MAC300 are available now, with delivery in six to eight weeks ARO.
