Toshiba Debuts New Series of CMOS-LDO Regulators for Mobile Devices

September 24, 2012 by Jeff Shepard

Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. announced the introduction of a new lineup of CMOS-LDO regulators for mobile devices. The new lineup features Toshiba's newly developed micro CMOS process and offers the highest level of drop-out voltage in the industry. The new regulators also achieve low noise output, low consumption current and excellent load transient response.

CMOS-LDO regulators have become the power management ICs of choice for mobile devices, as they enable a low profile, low supply current and low dropout. Toshiba's new TCR2EN, TCR2EE, TCR2EF, and TCR2DG series utilize a newly developed micro CMOS process, which helps the regulators to significantly improve the tradeoff between characteristics and size. Toshiba's TCR2DG is a 200mA output single LDO regulator which achieves a low-noise output of 18uV(rms) (2.5V output), excellent ripple rejection ratio 62dB at a high frequency (2.5V output, f = 10kHz), excellent responsibility under high-speed loads of output voltage differences = +65mV (IOUT = 1mA to 150mA, COUT = 1.0uF), and low drop-out characteristics of 80mV (2.5V output, IOUT = 100mA). By using an ultra-small (0.79mm x 0.79mm x 0.5mm) WCSP4 package, this LDO regulator is suitable for applications requiring high-density packaging, such as mobile devices.

In addition to overcurrent protection, output auto-discharge, and other basic functions, the new lineup of 200mA output LDO regulators control inrush current, making them suitable for a wide range of applications including mobile phones, portable audio players, notebook PCs, DSC/DVC, and other small mobile devices.

According to Talayeh Saderi, senior business development engineer for TAEC, "An ideal power management solution for mobile devices using battery power, CMOS LDOs provide space conscious designers with cost effective performance advantages -- all while extending battery life."
