TI Debuts TPS40130 Dual-Phase PWM Controller

September 20, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced a multi-phase, synchronous dc-dc buck controller with integrated adaptive gate drivers, the TPS40130, which saves valuable board space and simplifies power design for dual-channel, multi-phase systems supporting up to 60 A, such as double-data rate memory banks, point-of-load dc-dc converters, digital signal processors and ASICs used in telecom and networking power supplies.

The TPS40130 provides higher performance and power efficiency over competing pulse-width modulation (PWM) power supply solutions. The controller can support input voltages from 3 V to 40 V, with output voltages from 0.7 V to 6 V at greater than 90% efficiency. The TPS40130 implements fixed-frequency, peak current-mode control with single-cycle current balance. High accuracy current sensing can be implemented with an external sense resistor or loss-less dc resistance current sensing can be used. For added performance, an on-board differential load-sense amplifier provides remote load sensing for high-current, high-accuracy applications.

The TPS40130 is equipped with all supervisory and control features for today's power supplies, including programmable under-voltage lockout and over-voltage protection, power good indicator, synchronization input, programmable over-current protection and selectable load-line programming. In addition, the differential load sense amplifier provides remote load sensing for high-current applications.

The TPS40130 controller is now available in volume. Packaged in a 30-pin TSSOP, pricing is $1.30 each in quantities of 1,000 units. The TPS40K designer software for the TPS40130 will be available in the first quarter of 2005.
