May 07, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Thomson Industries (Port Washington, NY) added a new member to its BLX brushless servo motor series. Called the BLX173C2E000 Size 17, it is designed with high-energy magnets to provide a continuous torque of 1.5in/lb and a peak torque of 5.6in/lb. The motor is suitable for use in applications that demand high performance, durability and harsh environmental protection, such as XYZ systems, general automation, pick-and-place, packaging and material handling.

The BLX173C2E000 Size 17 has a maximum speed of 7,000rpm. It is constructed with IP65 environmental sealing, military-style fluid tight connectors, oversize bearings, and a winding thermal switch. In addition, the motor features an internal 2000 line-bearing mounted commutating encoder.

The BLX Series can be ordered in five sizes, each with various stack lengths and winding configurations. The motors are also available with Thomson Micron True Planetary gearheads in ratios from 3:1 to 100:1, and with internally mounted 24Vdc brakes. Matching Omnidrive digital servo drives and cables are available for a turnkey motor/drive solution. The motors are UL- and cUL-compliant. They are currently available off-the-shelf, with pricing starting at $498.00.
