Texas Instruments Offers the New TPS2306 Dual Power Supply Controller

May 08, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) is now offering a dual power supply controller with support for hot swap and voltage sequencing of add-in cards in high-availability systems. The device is designed to provide system protection and design flexibility for applications based on high-performance backplanes in networking, data storage, telecommunications, industrial control and other areas.

Developers can control inrush current directly with the TPS2306 by programming the on-chip linear current amplifiers with three simple external components. In addition, the device can be programmed with resistor dividers for unlimited sequencing combinations during power-up and power-down. TI claims that the TPS2306 has the lowest insertion loss of any hot-swap product currently on the market.

The TPS2306 features internally trimmed circuits that are designed to reduce the circuit break trip voltage and allow the use of very low-value resistors or PC board copper traces for sensing. An internal charge pump is designed to ensure maximum gate overdrive to reduce Rds(on) of the external N-channel MOSFET. In addition, the TPS2306 can be programmed to sequence the power-up or down of two voltage rails in any order. Two or more controllers can be cascaded to provide multiple outputs for systems with more complex power-up requirements. For maximum design flexibility, the TPS2306 also offers programmable over-current thresholds, programmable over-current transient filters, and an operating voltage range of 2.75V to 13.6V.

“Hot swapping of add-in cards is taking place in a wider variety of high availability systems, and designers need flexible exchange and event power management," said Steven Hemmah, hot-swap products manager at TI. “TI's new TPS2306 dual-sequencing power manager provides an easy-to-use solution that enables designers to program sequencing, ramp current and provide event protection features to meet today's system requirements."

The TPS2306 dual-sequencing hot swap power controller is currently available in a 16-pin SOIC package. Suggested pricing is $3.50 per unit in quantities of 1,000.
