Recaps of Recent Capacitor Developments

Doug Bess

The past several months have witnessed significant new product releases and technological developments related to the field of capacitor technology.

In June, Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) introduced what it says is the industry’s first fully integrated Li-Ion battery management integrated circuit (IC) for super capacitor charge control. This single device provides comprehensive features for managing charge control; measuring capacitance and effective series resistance (ESR); and protecting either 2-, 3-, 4- or 5-series super capacitors with individual capacitor control, or up to 9-series capacitors with stack control.

According to TI, the bq33100 maximizes functionality and safety, while dramatically increasing ease of use and cutting the solution cost and size for super capacitor applications. Battery-backed write cache applications, system bridge power and non-volatile dual in-line memory RAID controller cards need reliable super capacitor pack managers to ensure availability when the primary power fails.

Later that month, AVX Corp. expanded its HQ Series MLC surface mount RF power capacitors to include P90 dielectric versions for high power high frequency applications, such as medical and industrial electronics. The HQ Series MLC with the P90 dielectric material features an ultra-low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and dissipation factor at high frequencies. The HQ Series capacitor with P90 dielectric is currently available in C case sizes, with E case sizes available in the third quarter.

The HQ Series power capacitors are designed for 300 to 7,200V applications and feature a dielectric strength of 120% of rated WVDC. The devices can handle the high power and high voltage levels of RF power amplifiers, inductive heating, high magnetic field environments (MRI coils), and medical & industrial electronics.
