SynQor Intros 25A Quarter-Brick Converters

September 01, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

SynQor Inc. (Hudson, MA) introduced a new series of industry standard "quarter-brick" sized isolated dc/dc converters capable of delivering up to 25A of output current, without the need for an attached heatsink. The new PowerQor QN series use MOSFET synchronous rectifiers and a patent-pending, fixed switching frequency converter topology to achieve high efficiencies, even at low output voltages, according to SynQor. A 3.3Vout unit at 25A provides efficiencies of 87 percent, reducing dissipated heat by more than 50 percent over competing products, the firm claims. The PowerQor QN series includes output voltages of 15V, 12V, 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V, 2.0V, 1.8V and 1.5V. All units draw power from a 48V nominal input (35-75V) and deliver 25A or 100W of output, without requiring a heatsink. The converters are claimed to provide significantly better derating performance than competing products that use an attached heatsink, resulting in 2-3 times the true power density of typical dc/dc converters with attached heatsinks. The QN converters feature a low profile (0.4", low weight (1.2 oz.), standard footprint (1.45" x 2.3") and industry standard pin outs for compliance with existing dc/dc converters. The converters use a multi-layer PCB substrate and high-yield surface mount construction techniques. Additional features include on/off control, remote sense, no load operation, output voltage trim, input undervoltage lockout, output current limit, output overvoltage limit, temperature limit, and safety certifications from UL 1950, CSA 22.2-234, IEC 950, 72/23/EEC and 93/68/EEC. The QN Series will begin shipping in October 1999, and are priced at $94.50 in quantities of 1,000.
