White Goods Targeted by Multiple Exhibitors at PCIM
On the first day of PCIM 2012, International Rectifier, ON Semiconductor and Toshiba Electronics Europe announced new devices aimed at various segments of the white goods market.
International Rectifier (IR) introduced a family of highly integrated, ultra-compact, patent pending µIPM™ power modules for high efficiency appliance and light industrial applications including compressor drives for refrigeration, pumps for heating and water circulation, air-conditioning fans, dishwashers, and automation systems. By utilizing a new packaging solution, the µIPM family offers up to a 60 percent smaller footprint than existing 3-phase motor control power ICs.
Available in a 12 x 12 x 0.9mm PQFN package, the µIPM family comprises a series of fully integrated 3-phase surface-mount motor control circuit solutions. The new approach pioneered by IR for this market segment utilizes PCB copper traces to dissipate heat from the module, providing cost savings through a smaller package design and even eliminating the need for an external heat sink. By using standard packaging QFN technology, assembly is simplified by eliminating through-hole second pass assembly and improving thermal performance compared to traditional dual-in-line module solutions.

"By utilizing an innovative packaging solution, IR’s µIPM products not only offer up to 60 percent smaller footprint compared to existing leading solutions but also deliver advantages in output current capability and system efficiency. Combined with ease of use, improved thermal performance and overall system size reduction, the µIPM family enables designers and system integrators to deliver more cost effective and advanced motor control solutions," said Alberto Guerra, Vice President, Strategic Market Development, IR’s Energy Saving Products Business Unit.
ON Semiconductor today at PCIM announced a new series of Field Stop Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) targeted at industrial motor control and consumer products. The NGTB15N120, NGTB20N120 and NGTB25N120 enable power conversion solutions for a wide range of demanding applications, including induction cook tops, rice cookers and other small kitchen appliances.
Opinion: Maximising Synergies between Power Electronics and ICT for improving Energy Efficiency
"Increasing energy prices and environmental concerns around carbon emissions are continuously driving demand for higher performance power discrete components, especially in high power inductive and inverter applications. These new 1200 volt (V) rated IGBTs utilize deep trench technology and state-of-the-art wafer thinning and processing techniques to enable very low turn-off losses while maintaining a low "ON" state voltage during turn-on, which results in lower switching and conduction losses. These devices are offered with a choice of 15 ampere (A), 20 A and 25 A current ratings and are co-packaged with a very low forward drop and soft-recovery fast rectifier to meet stringent customer requirements for high efficiency while providing a space efficient complete solution," said John Trice, senior director and general manager for ON Semiconductor’s Power Discrete Division
Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) launched a new series of highly integrated, single-chip inverter IPDs (intelligent power devices) that minimize component count and improve efficiency in inverter drives for brushless DC (BLDC) motors.
Offering a 20% reduction in power loss compared to previous device generations, the
TPD4144K and TPD4144AK IPDs (intelligent power devices) provide single-chip solutions to high-voltage PWM control in applications including home appliances, low-power fans and pumps and industrial automation systems. All that a designer needs to deliver effective motor control is provide a logic input from a host microprocessor or motor controller.
Designed for motor control applications requiring output voltages and currents up to 500V and 2A, the TPD4144K and TPD4144AK are supplied in compact DIP26 packaging measuring just 32 x 13mm. The packages are fully pin-compatible with other Toshiba IPDs. Each package integrates full three-phase inverter bridge operation including input logic, a level-shift high-side driver, a low-side driver, a three-phase bridge output using IGBTs to provide current to the motor stator, and a three-shunt resistor circuit for current sensing.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.
