Alpha Technologies Launches Converter System and Dual Voltage Power System to Enable Upgrades to 4G and LTE
Alpha Technologies Ltd. announced the launch of the CXPS 24–48-i Converter System, an integrated 24-to-48V converter and distribution plant that enables service providers to add 4G and LTE radios to legacy 24V cell sites, without having to replace the existing power system.
Unlike other converter plants, the CXPS 24–48-i provides up to 8000W of high efficiency, high density power conversion along with up to 18 distribution positions in a low profile 5RU package.
Key features of the CXPS 24-48-i include:
-- Integrated 8kW capacity 24-48Vdc converter system with front access distribution
-- Support for small to medium 48Vdc loads from legacy 24V power system
Opinion: Unraveling the Ultra-Low Power Design Issues
-- Integrated Cordex CXCi controller for advanced local and remote monitoring and control
-- Internal low voltage smart shutdown feature for cost effective integration into existing systems
-- Universal 19/23" mounting for flexible installation options into existing racks
"Alpha’s modular 2kW Cordex converter system enables wireless service providers to power both 24V and 48V radios at the same cell site while allowing them to continue using the same single voltage battery plant," said Iain Selkirk, Product Manager for Power and Distribution Systems at Alpha. "The CXPS 24–48-i can be connected to existing 24V power systems to provide the 48V power and distribution needed for 4G and LTE upgrades. The low profile package makes it suitable for rack and cabinet applications."
The company also announced the launch of the CXPS-M 1200 dual voltage power system, a midsize power plant that can be equipped with either single or dual voltage outputs, enabling service providers to power cell sites or small switching centers with a single bay of power. The system is ideal for powering both 48-volt 4G and LTE equipment and 24-volt legacy radios using the same battery plant.
Unlike other midsize power plants, the CXPS-M can serve 24 or 48 volt applications, or a mixture of both, using high efficiency rectifiers to maximize operating efficiency and lower OPEX. This extremely flexible platform is a compact, front access design that features oversized bus work and 25mV shunts.
Key features of the CXPS-M 1200 include:
-- -48V power solution for cell site, CO, MSC, Data Center and Cable Headend facilities
-- Each 1200A bay combines rectifiers, battery termination and distribution; simplifying installation
-- Dual voltage options use high efficiency dc to dc converters for legacy cell site application
-- High efficiency modular rectifiers reduce operating costs
-- Compact front access design reduces floor space footprint
-- Flexible low voltage load or battery disconnect, circuit breaker, TPS and TPL fuse options
"The CXPS-M series is Alpha’s newest addition to our growing portfolio of advanced dc power systems," said Iain Selkirk, Product Manager for Power and Distribution Systems at Alpha. "The dual voltage feature makes it easy to upgrade from legacy radios to 4G equipment. The system can be configured for 48V primary voltage for powering the 4G equipment, and with 24V converters to power the legacy radio equipment. This arrangement permits the carrier to use a single battery plant, reducing floor space and maintenance. Of course, it performs just as well in single voltage sites."
The CXPS-M 1200 will be available for purchase in May 2012.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
