Phihong Develops 80W External AC-DC LED Driver

Power Channels: Power Components

Phihong USA has developed a new 80W constant voltage LED driver that is ideal for a variety of harsh environment lighting applications. Designated the PDA080B-48VG, the universal input driver is rated for inputs of 100 to 304Vac and has a maximum output of 80W at 48Vdc and 1.67A.

"This new outdoor LED driver satisfies a niche architectural lighting design need by providing enough power to operate several luminaires at once for wash and area lighting," said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing for Phihong USA. "The constant voltage design enables users to power an array of individual luminaires via driver ICs, eliminating the need for each to have its own separate driver."

The new ac-dc LED driver is compliant with UL8750 and bears safety approvals from CE and cUL/UL. Additionally, the universal input of 100 to 304Vac enables the driver to be fully functional at mains voltage inputs ranging from the standard North American 120 and 277Vac to the standard European 230 and 240Vac.

The PDA080B is water-resistant and fully potted, featuring an ingress protection rating of 65, and can withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to +60°C. Both highly efficient and reliable, the driver boasts minimum average efficiency ratings ranging from 84% at 120Vac input to over 88% at 277Vac input and has a calculated lifespan of 50,000 hours when operating at maximum load and an ambient 50°C.

The 80W LED driver also comes fully equipped with input over-current protection, short-circuit protection, output over-voltage protection, and open-circuit protection; features a minimum power factor correction greater than 0.9; and is covered by the five year warranty that Phihong offers on select LED drivers, including the PDA080 driver series.

Opinion: Unraveling the Ultra-Low Power Design Issues

Designed as a typical ballast with regards to shape and size, the PDA080B can easily be incorporated into new outdoor architectural lighting designs. Each driver measures 241 x 43 x 30.5mm and weighs 750 grams. Pricing for the PDA080B-48VG starts at $99.97 in single unit quantities.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
