IR Expands SupIRBuck Online Design Tool to Simplify POL Design Using Integrated Voltage Regulators

Power Channels: Power Components

International Rectifier, (IR)® announced that the company has expanded its online design tool for the SupIRBuck® family of integrated point-of-load voltage regulators to include new devices utilizing hysteretic constant on-time (COT) control designed to offer improved light load efficiency.

The user friendly, interactive, web-based tool now enables the rapid selection, electrical and thermal simulation and design optimization of over 15 SupIRBuck integrated voltage regulators. The expanded product line includes high-voltage (27V) devices, current ratings up to 15 A and regulators in both 5 x 6mm and 4 x 5mm packages. Enhanced simulation capabilities now include the unique ability to compensate COT control devices using Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors for lower cost applications as well as all-ceramic capacitors for higher frequency applications.

Based on a designer’s given input and output parameters, the SupIRBuck online tool selects suitable devices for a given application. Once basic requirements are entered, the tool allows the user to capture schematics, create a reference design along with associated Bill of Materials (BOM), view waveforms, and perform complex thermal and application analysis quickly and easily to dramatically accelerate development time.

"We are committed to providing best-in-class design support to our rapidly expanding customer base," said Goran Stojcic, Executive Director, POL group, IR’s Enterprise Power Business Unit. "We recognize that our products are now being used in lower cost and higher frequency applications, and are excited to add a richer compensation selection for our customers, including Aluminum and all-ceramic systems."

The tool is designed and engineered to assist a variety of designers, from power experts to digital specialists with limited exposure to analog design. SupIRbuck devices featured in the tool cover load currents up to 15A, input voltages up to 27V and output voltages as low as 0.5V, and are supported by standard and customizable demo kits, reference designs, datasheets, and application notes.

Opinion: Unraveling the Ultra-Low Power Design Issues

IR’s SupIRBuck voltage regulators integrate IR’s high performance synchronous buck control ICs and benchmark HEXFET® trench technology MOSFETs in a compact Power QFN package, shrinking the silicon footprint compared to discrete solutions, and offering between 8 to 10 percent higher full-load efficiency than competing monolithic ICs.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
