IDTI to Sell Wafer Fab facility to Alpha & Omega Semi for $26M

Power Channels: Power Components

Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT®) announced that it intends to sell its Hillsboro, Oregon wafer fabrication facility and related assets to Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Ltd. (AOS). Under a foundry service arrangement with IDT, AOS has the option to acquire the wafer fabrication facility and related assets for $26 million. The anticipated sale is subject to the execution of a definitive asset purchase agreement with customary closing conditions between AOS and IDT. If the transaction proceeds according to plan, IDT estimates the parties would enter into an asset purchase agreement by the end of calendar year 2011 and the transaction would close by the end of January 31, 2012.

"This announcement marks an important phase in IDT’s transition to a fabless semiconductor company. Our system solution strategy requires access to a wide variety of process technologies and an ecosystem of outsourced manufacturing partners. Two years ago, IDT entered into a product fabrication agreement with TSMC and we are nearing completion of the transfer of our products and process technologies to their fabs." said Dr. Ted Tewksbury, President and Chief Executive Officer at Integrated Device Technology. "The transformation to a fabless model will enable IDT to focus our resources and investments on innovative new product definition and development, while outsourcing manufacturing to industry leading foundry partners."

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
