HP Unveils Uninterruptible Power Systems with Power Protection Support for Virtualized Environments

June 27, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

Hewlett Packard (HP) unveiled the HP UPS R1500 G3 and the HP UPS R/T3000 G2, high-density uninterruptible power systems (UPS) for customers managing space-constrained rack environments. With new communication firmware, shutdown protection software, and an optional network management card, these systems can communicate directly in a variety of networking environments such as the Web and complex virtualized environments.

The new HP R/T3000 G2 UPS packs up to 3300VA and 3000W into a space-saving, 2U (3.5 inches) design. According to HP, proven digital signal processor (DSP) technology ensures clean, reliable power protection in an energy-efficient, transformer-less design that also reduces generated heat. The HP R/T3000 G2 UPS includes a rack-to-tower conversion kit for non-rack applications outside the data center or to support multiple tower servers, wiring closets, and blade enclosures.

The new HP R1500 G3 is an ultra slim 1500 VA rack-mount UPS to ease network managers’ need for additional rack space while maintaining high-availability power backup. With up to 1500VA/1050W, the UPS measures just 1U (1.75 inches) and provides what is described as tremendous power density.

According to HP, it has an exclusive Enhanced Battery Management (EBM) technology that can double the battery life within the HP UPS in comparison to competitive batteries on the market. With EBM, the need to regularly replace and recycle old batteries is reduced. EBM features an advance self-testing system that provides a 30-day pre-failure warning, leaving sufficient time for customers to replace the hot-swappable batteries before trouble occurs.

For additional management flexibility of connected/protected devices, the UPSs provide separate load segments which allow for a customizable configuration of each segment’s power backup requirements.

Bundled with HP’s new Power Protector software, the HP UPS R1500 G3 and HP UPS R/T3000 G2 feature serial and USB ports for data exchange with the host computer and remote shut-down. The optional HP UPS Network Module provides additional functionality, such as scheduled shutdowns, additional operating systems support including VMware and Hyper-V, and redundant UPS support for no single point of failure.

The HP UPS R1500 G3 and HP UPS R/T3000 G2 are available now with U.S. Internet prices starting at $849. Prices in Canada start at CAN$1,064. Pricing may vary by country or region.
