STMicroelectronics Introduces Chip that Functions as a Controller

July 01, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

STMicroelectronics (Switzerland) announced an integrated semiconductor chip that functions as a controller and can be directly embedded in the motor assemblies and solenoids of cars. The new design can be integrated into the electromechanical components of a car.

ST reports that the new chip has been produced for DaimlerChrysler (Germany) and expects to produce similar chips for other automotive applicants in the near future. The company claims that the new chip eliminates the need for an electronics box, and represents a key step towards the mechatronic car, in which intelligence will be distributed throughout a car and embedded in the mechanical components.
