Sorensen Intros DLM DC/DC Power Supplies

June 27, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Sorensen (San Diego), a division of Elgar, announced the introduction of its DLM family of low-profile programmable dc/dc power supplies. The new three- and four-kilowatt power supplies provide very stable output for a broad range of applications and are housed in a 2U rackmount enclosure. These supplies only require airflow through the front panel for cooling, to allow the highest rackmount equipment density.Sorensen optimized ease of use and safety in the DLM by allowing a preview of voltage, current and overvoltage protection (OVP) settings before the output is turned on. Status indicators on the front panel include output power status, thermal shutdown status, remote/local status, OVP, over-temperature and front panel lockout to eliminate the possibility of unauthorized or intentional changes to programmed settings. The DLM models have two operating modes: constant voltage and constant current. The constant voltage model regulates output voltage at the user's selected value, while the output current varies with the load requirements. The constant current model regulates the output current at the selected value while the output voltage varies with the load requirements. An automatic crossover system enables the power supplies to switch operating modes in response to varying load requirements. The five different 3kW models offer a section of voltage ranges from 0-8Vdc up to 0-80Vdc with current ranges of 0-37A up to 0-350A. The 4kW DLM units have the same choice of voltage ranges and current ranges from 0-50A and 0-450A. Up to five DLM power supplies can be connected in parallel to increase the current output and up to three can be connected in series to voltage output. The standard non-isolated analog interface enables full programmability and status monitoring while the optional IEE-488.2 GPIB interface or Isolated Analog Interface allows additional communication and control features. The DLM Series is certified to International CE safety standards and select models will be available in July 1999 with prices starting at $2,495.
