Sonnenschein Lithium Intros Pulses Plus Batteries

November 29, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Sonnenschein Lithium GmbH (Büdingen, Germany) announced their new Pulses Plus lithium batteries at the electronica 2000 conference. The company claims that these new batteries combine the power capability of spirally-wound lithium cells with the high-energy density and low self-discharge rate of safer bobbin-type lithium-thionyl chloride cells.

The Pulses Plus technology consists of a combination of a bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride cell with a hermetically-sealed rechargeable element, the Hybrid Layer Capacitor (HLC). This new battery technology can be used to deliver current pulses up to several amperes with a minimum voltage of no more than 3V. Moreover, this basic battery can be connected in series and in parallel to battery packs for higher voltages, higher current pulses and higher capacities.

Features of the new batteries include a wide operating temperature range, from -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C, no passivation effect, and a storage capability of up to more than ten years. In addition, the Pulses Plus batteries are UL approved.

Sonnenschein Lithium recommends the Pulses Plus batteries for automotive electronics, location and tracking systems, emergency equipment, medical equipment, oceanographic devices, and automatic meter-reading devices.
