Siliconix Launches New TrenchFET Power MOSFETs

August 06, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Siliconix Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) announced a series of TrenchFET power MOSFETs that give designers new options for forthcoming passenger car designs. The new MOSFET series applies to commercial diesel vehicle applications where a higher-voltage standard is already in use. The series was introduced to support the upcoming transition to a 42V bus in automobiles.

According to Vishay, four of the released devices have set records for on-resistance for their respective voltage ratings and package styles: 10.5 milliohms for the 100V SUP85N10-10 (TO-220) and SUB85N10-10 (D2PAK).

According to Siliconix, two 75V devices in the TO-220 (SUP85N08-08) and D2PAK (SUB85N08-08) are also record-breakers with 8 milliohms on-resistance. All four TrenchFETs are designed to handle up to 85A of current. The new TrenchFETs will be used to drive motors and replace relays in 42V bus cars, while the most common application in commercial diesel vehicle applications will be fuel-injector drivers. The 100V and 75V options provide alternatives for designers, depending on whether maximum breakdown voltage or minimal on-resistance is the key design factor. For applications where a higher level of on-resistance is acceptable, Vishay is introducing a fifth device, the SUD40N10-25, with a maximum rating of 25 milliohms. This fifth device features a 100V breakdown voltage rating with a 40A maximum current rating and surface-mount DPAK packaging.

Samples and production quantities of the new TrenchFETs are available now, with lead times of six to eight weeks for larger orders. Pricing for US delivery in OEM quantities starts at $2.02.
