Sanyo Electric Company Constructs Solar Cell Plant for Manufacturing Semiconductor Chips

September 07, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Sanyo Electric Company Ltd. (Japan) is constructing a 3.4MW solar cell plant for its Gifu Plant for manufacturing semiconductor chips. The plant will annually generate an estimated 3,700MWh of power. The solar cell uses a proprietary cell structure featuring amorphous silicon film on a single crystal-silicon substrate, achieving a high cell-conversion efficiency of 18 percent in production and 20 percent at laboratory levels. The solar cell will be completed by the end of 2001, at a cost of 6.0 billion yen.
