ROHM Intros Low Quiescent Current Technology for Linear and Switching Regulators

January 30, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

ROHM Semiconductor has announced new linear regulators and switching regulators based on innovative low quiescent current (Iq) technology. The new power management devices utilize a proprietary circuit design to significantly reduce current consumption during stand-by.

Efficient power management has become an increasingly-important design consideration in order to save energy, especially for applications relying on battery power. Power consumption in stand-by mode has proved to be especially problematic. In response to this, ROHM has developed new compact, high precision, low Iq regulators in two different versions.

The BD7xxLx series in a HTSOP-J8 package is a family of low quiescent current linear regulators featuring 45V absolute maximum voltage, an output voltage accuracy of ±2%, 200mA or 500mA output current and 6.5µA (Typ.) current consumption. Low saturation voltage is achieved by using a PMOS output transistor and ceramic capacitors can be used for compensation of the output capacitor phase.

The BD9901x series in a HTSSOP-B24 package offers low Iq dc-dc switching regulators for a maximum input voltage of 42V, 2A output current and a quiescent current consumption of typ. 22 µA. Integrated MOSFETs serve as synchronous rectifier and the switching frequency is scaled from 200 to 500 kHz. In addition, the line-up features current mode control.

Key features of the low Iq LDO BD7xxLx series include; HTSOP-J8 package (4.9 x 6.0 x 1.0mm³), Input: 3.0 to 45V, Output: 3.3V or 5.0V - 200mA or 500mA, Quiescent current: typ. 6.5µA, Low saturation voltage by using PMOS output transistor, Supporting low ESR ceramic capacitor, and AEC-Q100 qualified.

Features of the low Iq dc-dc switching regulators BD9901x series include; HTSSOP-B24 package (7.8 x 7.6 x 1.0mm3), Input: 3.6 to 42V, Output: 3.3V or 5.0V - 2A, Quiescent current: typ. 22µA, Synchronous rectifier: integrated MOSFETs, Switching frequency of 200 to 500 kHz, and AEC-Q100 qualified.

The LDO series is already available in OEM quantities. The Low Iq switching regulators are available in sample quantities, OEM quantities will be available in February 2013.
