Pre-Engineered Integrated Solutions for Lighting Designs

April 10, 2017 by Jeff Shepard

TE Connectivity (TE) is unveiling innovations at LIGHTFAIR International (LFI) 2017 that increase efficiency in its customers' development projects. New products that TE will showcase include the MSM (Multi-Sensor Module) platform, the compact LUMAWISE Drive for LED track and spot lighting, and the LUMAWISE Endurance N Enhanced Base for outdoor lighting control solutions.

Trends toward “big data,” the IoT, and energy and air quality management are driving the opportunity to integrate multiple sensors into single affordable packages. TE’s MSM platform of products consists of an application-specific set of sensors brought together by TE on a single printed circuit board assembly with an I2C digital output. Central to each module are the “Core 4”—the most commonly used sensors for detecting motion, temperature, humidity and light. Optional MSM additions in the future for the Core 4 will detect sound and gases (CO2 and CO).

“Our customers can now bring products with environmental sensing capability to market faster by incorporating TE pre-engineered and assembled sensor modules, while keeping their own resources focused on what they do best,” says Scott Hamilton, TE product manager.

MSMs are easily attached to the host board, enabling devices to poll environmental data from the MSM and make decisions based on the input. For example, a ceiling grid of lights installed in a room with an MSM designed into each fixture’s control can form an array of sensors that measure temperature, humidity, light and occupancy throughout the space. This allows a building controller to make adjustments to the building’s HVAC equipment to enhance the comfort of a workspace or adjust the light level based on time of day, occupancy, or external ambient light contribution.

The LUMAWISE Drive Type Z50 is designed for track and spot lighting since it integrates a 48Vdc powered constant-current LED driver into the same form factor as TE’s successful range of LUMAWISE LED Holders Type Z50 for chip-on-board (COB) LEDs. Until now, LED drivers have been housed in boxes, often larger than the lamp itself, mounted to the side of the luminaire and remote to the COB light source.

This required wiring between the light source and driver, creating design and manufacturing complexity. TE’s new LUMAWISE Drive integrates holder and driver into a single package that offers lighting designers the possibility to develop compact, better-looking and more cost-effective lighting products.

The LUMAWISE Drive Type Z50 will be available in several versions, beginning with a simple on/off model and a 0-10V dimmable type, soon to be followed by a version with DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) dimming. All three versions are offered in a variety of fixed current outputs and sizes to work with a wide range of commercially available COB LEDs.

The LUMAWISE Endurance N Enhanced Base creates a platform for the customer’s rapid development and manufacture of NEMA/ANSI C136.41 compliant street and outdoor lighting control solutions. It takes TE’s existing LUMAWISE Base assembly to the next level of performance by integrating the ac power switching and dc power supply, needed by smart streetlight controls, onto the C136.41 compliant base assembly. Integral features are provided to simplify the attachment and connection of the customer’s custom control circuitry.

“With this new development, we are helping reduce risk in project schedules and cutting the cost of design changes, all the while enabling the customer to focus their efforts on their particular value-adding innovations,” says Rick Stuby, TE business development manager.

The LUMAWISE Endurance N Enhanced Base incorporates a mechanical architecture that supports design reuse, modularity, and end-of-line customization across outdoor lighting control products.
