Digital Power Thrives at Darnell's Power China
Power Channels: Digital Power, Energy Efficiency, Power Quality Protection, Renewable Energy, Smart Grid Power, Switch-Mode Power
Darnell’s Power China (DPC), being held in Shanghai, May 15-16, is proving that digital power management is alive and well and thriving. Almost half of the papers being presented are related to digital power and control. And that is not surprising, considering all the unique ways digital control is currently being used. The “first wave” of commercial adoption has passed, and a second wave is gathering steam and offering new opportunities.
The biggest emerging market for digital control is power factor correction (PFC), according to Darnell’s new, updated “Digital Power Electronics” report. Texas Instruments will present a paper on, “Advanced Digital Controls Improve PFC Performance,” which will take advantage of a power supply market that is expected to reach nearly 2 billion units over the next few years. This includes external ac-dc power supplies, embedded ac-dc power supplies, inverters, telecom rectifiers and external dc-dc converters.
There is a growing correlation between PFC and digital power ICs designed for ac-dc power supplies, in particular. PFC is becoming a requirement in these applications, with efficiency gains possible when implementing advanced PFC topologies with digital control components. Much of this is driven by regulations, which is always a helpful market driver.
Digital power has energized the energy efficiency market, providing the means to a very important end. It works with many kinds of power supplies and has enabled many emerging architectures, infrastructures, and end-user devices. I’d be hard-pressed to find a more versatile technology for the coming decade. So it isn’t surprising that DPC will also feature a number of papers on grid-related trends – including the smart grid.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
