Power Integrations Intros TOP412/414 High-Voltage Integrated Switchers

June 27, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Power Integrations Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) announced the availability of the TOP412/414 high-voltage integrated switcher family for dc/dc converters. The TOP412/414 integrates a PWM controller and high-voltage MOSFET on a monolithic die, providing a compact solution unavailable from comparable discrete solutions, according to Power Integrations. As few as 15 components are required for a 10W, 5V isolated flyback converter which achieves over 80 percent efficiency. Total board space is only 19.2 sq. cm (3.0 sq. in.). The internal high-voltage MOSFET is designed to easily handle input voltages up to 90Vdc without the need for production circuitry. The TOP412/414 also incorporates cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shut down which further lowers component count. The TOP414 can deliver 12W of output power from a 48Vdc input. Both the TOP412 and TOP414 are currently in production. In 10,000-piece quantities, they are priced at $1.49 and $1.67 respectively. Devices are available in an 8-pin surface mount package in tape-and-reel. Samples and the DAK-5 are available.
