Power Integrations Expands TOPSwitch-GX Family with TO-263 SMD Package

August 14, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Power Integrations Inc. (San Jose, CA) announced the availability of a new surface-mount package option for its TOPSwitch-GX product line, a high-power monolithic switcher IC family. Eight new devices, ranging in power up to 82W, are now offered in the standard TO-263 surface-mount package, also known as the D2PAK.

The new surface-mount parts are targeted for high-power applications where through-hole assembly is not an option due to height, layout or manufacturing requirements. The TO-263 package also saves the cost of a heatsink by effectively delivering the heat directly to the printed circuit board. Typical applications include power adapters for laptops and LCD monitors, set-top boxes, and other low-profile electronic equipment.

"The TO-263 package option greatly expands the range of applications supported by our TOPSwitch-GX family," said Rich Fassler, Power Integrations' vice president of marketing. "The features included with our original TOPSwitch-GX ICs have already delivered power supply design simplification, reduced parts count, smaller size, and energy-efficiency advantages to a wide range of high-power applications. Now they can find their way into applications demanding surface-mount assembly," Fassler added.

Pricing for the new TOPSwitch-GX surface-mount parts in 5,000-piece quantities ranges from $1.58 each for the TOP242R-TL, rated at up to 22W, to $2.94 each for the 82W-rated TOP249R-TL. Sample quantities are available from stock with production quantities available four weeks ARO.
