POLA to Embrace PMbus for Digital DC-DC Products

January 23, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (St. Louis, MO), announced that the Point of Load Alliance (POLA) is intending to jointly design and release products in accordance to the PMbus specification. The digital interface and control specification will make power conversion products more advanced and flexible without increasing complexity for the end user.

During 2005, the members of POLA intend to release digitally controlled products that are completely interoperable. In doing so, POLA members’ products will offer more advanced features and hence provide the possibility for end users to revolutionize their power management.

Companies currently forming POLA include Texas Instruments, Artesyn Technologies, Emerson Network Power’s Astec Power (Carlsbad, CA) and Ericsson Power Modules. The PMbus is a working group consisting of several power and semiconductor companies that aim to release an open protocol supporting communication to power supplies via a digital bus.
