Oriental Motor USA Announces AS69, AS911 AlphaStep Stepping Motor Systems

April 25, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Oriental Motor USA Corp. (Torrance, CA) announced new, higher-torque AlphaStep stepping motor systems, in round shaft and electromagnetic brake types. The AS911 measures 3.35" square by 4.33" long and achieves a maximum holding torque of 552 ounce-inches. It attains a continuous torque of approximately 276 ounce-inches at 1,500rpm, 306W output. The smaller AS69 measures 2.36" square by 3.72" long and produces 276 ounce-inches maximum holding torque. It provides a continuous torque of approximately 136 ounce-inches at 2,200rpm, 221W output. The AS69 is also available with an electromagnetic brake, providing 141.6 ounce-inches of static friction torque.

Drivers are available with input powers of single-phase 115Vac, 60Hz and 230Vac, 60Hz. They are also available with input powers of three-phase 230Vac, 60Hz. The driver is 5.91" x 4.72" x 1.77" and responds to external pulse and direction (two pulse input) commands. Protection functions include overheat, overload, over-voltage, speed error, over-current and over-speed signals. A velocity filter adjustment function is provided to smooth acceleration and deceleration.

The AlphaStep Series uses a built-in feedback device that constantly monitors the motor shaft position to detect and correct for loss of synchronism. This is intended to eliminate missed steps. Oriental Motor USA maintains that AlphaStep has a very high response since it runs open loop under normal conditions and only runs in closed loop with a position deviation of ±1.8 degrees or greater is seen. The AlphaStep uses microstep control, up to 10,000 steps per revolution, to provide smooth, low-speed operation.
