Toshiba, APEC and Vicor Target DC-DC Applications
During the recent PCIM Europe trade show Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE), Advanced Power Electronics Corp. (APEC) and Vicor Corp. all introduced products targeting various dc-dc converter applications. TEE expanded its family of low-voltage, ultra-efficient MOSFETs with two new series that deliver the lowest ON resistance (RDS(ON)) in their class. APEC announced a miniature, ultra-low on-resistance 6A dual load switch. Comprising two N-channel MOSFETs with associated control circuitry, the APE8990-3 has an RDS(ON) of 20mΩ and controlled turn on functionality. And Vicor announced the expansion of its ultra-high density Picor Cool-Power® PI31xx series of isolated, ZVS-based dc-dc converters optimized for 24 V industrial, 28 V aerospace/defense and/or demanding wide temperature applications. The new Cool-Power PI31xx converters retain the product series’ signature 0.87" x 0.65" x 0.265" surface-mount package profile to provide up to 334 W/in3 power density and 2,250 V input to output isolation.

European Project Reports Achievements in Drive to Shape the Future of Power Microelectronics
LAST POWER (Large Area silicon-carbide Substrates and heTeroepitaxial GaN for POWER device applications), the European Union-sponsored program aimed at developing a cost-effective and reliable technology for power electronics, today announced its three-year program achievements that place Europe at the forefront of research and the commercialization of energy-efficient devices for industrial and automotive applications, consumer electronics, renewable-energy conversion systems, and telecommunications.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.
