Raychem Circuit Protection (Menlo Park, CA) recently announced the VTP240, the newest addition to its Polyswitch Battery Protection line. According to Raychem, the VTP240 has the highest hold current of the VTP range (2.4V) enabling over-current and over-temperature protection for high current applications. The 16V, 100A device is designed for prismatic cells where it can provide thermal as well as short circuit protection. According to the company, at 25 degrees C, the VTP240 has a hold current of 2.4A, with internal resistance of between 0.014 ohms and 0.026 ohms. The PolySwitch VTP battery protection device is a polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuse that functions as a low-resistance series element between battery cells and pack circuits. According to the company, the VTP devices are well suited for lithium-ion packs where low charging temperatures are desired. The VTP240 is Raychem's solution for OEMs that require a resettable fuse for high current drain applications, said Frank Owen, marketing manager, Raychem Circuit Protection. Raychem developed this new device in an effort to help its customers enter new portable electronics market opportunities where large area displays and high processing power are used, such as Internet phones.
