New Book from The Green Grid and ASHRAE Explains PUE Metric for Data Centers
The Green Grid® Association together with ASHRAE have collaborated to create and publish a new resource on Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), titled PUE™: A Comprehensive Examination of the Metric. According to the announcement, the new book consolidates all previously published material related to PUE and includes some new material. Whether a novice or expert in the IT industry, a CIO or facility planner, ITE manufacturer or energy auditor, the book is an essential guide for all who implement, report on and make decisions based on data center energy use metrics.
"Data centers are complex systems for which power and cooling remain key issues facing IT organizations today. The Green Grid Association's PUE metric has been instrumental in helping data center owners and operators better understand and improve the energy efficiency of their existing data centers, as well as helping them make better decisions on new data center deployments," said John Tuccillo, chairman of the board for The Green Grid Association and ‎vice president of Global Industry and Government Alliances at Schneider Electric.
For sale at a cost of $59 in either print of PDF formats through ASHRAE's web site and at conferences, the new book provides a high level description of the concepts surrounding PUE, plus in-depth application knowledge and resources to those implementing, reporting, and analyzing data center metrics. It also includes detailed information on procedures for calculating, reporting and analyzing PUE measurements, plus quick references to other resources in print and online.
PUE measures the relationship between the total facility energy consumed and the IT equipment energy consumed. When viewed in the proper context, PUE provides strong guidance for and useful insight into the design of efficient power and cooling architectures, the deployment of equipment within those architectures, and the day-to-day operation of that equipment. Since its original publication in 2007, the metric has been globally adopted and The Green Grid has continued to refine the metric's measurement methodology with collaborative industry feedback.
