NEC Provides New KX1 Series Microcontrollers

September 24, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

NEC Electronics Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) announced a new microcontroller architecture that provides a design platform for 8-bit and 32-bit microcontrollers, the KX1™ Series, which consists of the 8-bit 78K0/KX1™ and the 32-bit V850ES/KX1™.

The 78K0/KX1 Series microcontrollers feature new advanced peripherals, including

FailSafe circuitry, a device and system power-on reset function, and a low-voltage indicator. The 78K0/KX1 operates between 2MHz and 10MHz and generates less than 100 micro-decibels for minimal electromagnetic interference. The microcontrollers operate at 2.7V to 5.5V and at temperatures ranging from -40 to +85 degrees C. Select versions of

the 78K0/KX1 microcontrollers designed for use in automotive and other extended-temperature applications will operate at temperatures ranging from -40 to +125 degrees C.

The V850ES/KX1 Series features a 32-bit RISC core running at 20MHz, 24 million instructions per second, a power consumption of 9mW, and an integrated phase-lock-loop macro. The V850ES/KX1 microcontrollers operate at temperatures ranging -40 to +85 degrees C. The 32-bit microcontrollers are targeted at both 32-bit and 16-bit applications in the industrial control and automotive areas.

Engineering samples for the first products

in the 78K0/KX1 and V850ES/KX1 sub-series are

currently available. Additional versions of

the KX1 Series are planned for release

throughout 2002. Mass production for both sub-series is scheduled for third-quarter 2002. Prices range from $2 to $12 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
