NEC Mobile Energy and NEC Electronics Develop New Laminate-Manganese Lithium-Ion Battery

April 23, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

NEC Mobile Energy Corp. and NEC Electronics Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) have developed one of the industry's most advanced laminate-manganese lithium-ion rechargeable battery cells. The three new battery cells (IML270530-2, IML270330-2 and the IML350362-1) are aimed at applications in mobile communication units, such as cellular phones.

The new cells use a laminate film for battery casing rather than the conventional aluminum or steel so they are of smaller size (27mm and 35mm) and weight (5, 8 and 15 grams) and are also well suited for next-generation thin-form personal digital assistants. Due to the battery cells' consistency with proven prismatic designs, the superior performance characteristics of manganese-prismatic cells are maintained.
