NEC Debuts the NBPD0E227M Polymer Niobium Capacitor

July 15, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

NEC Corp. (Japan) has developed the NB/P Series of conductive-polymer, solid electrolytic capacitors fabricated using niobium. The initial product, the NBPD0E227M, has a capacitance of 220uF. Its ESR is 55mohms maximum and its dc-rated voltage is 2.5V. It features a D case size, measuring 7.3mm x 4.3mm x 2.8mm.

With a shape and structure identical to conventional chip tantalum capacitors, the niobium capacitors offer equivalent quality and performance. NEC believes that the advantage to the new capacitors is a more stable supply. The company reports that available niobium deposits are said to be 100 times more than those of tantalum, making niobium capacitors suitable for mass production. The devices also exhibit low ESR.

Sample shipments of the NB/P Series of capacitors are slated to begin in August 2001, with mass production scheduled for early 2002.
