Motorola Solutions Invests in Pellion’s Batteries

January 20, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Pellion Technologies announced an investment by Motorola Solutions. Pellion's next-generation technology enables novel, high-energy-density batteries delivering twice the energy of lithium-ion cells in a comparable weight and volume. Pellion's batteries are now being tested in select demonstration devices in the mobile, wireless and robotics spaces.

“Motorola Solutions has a long and consistent track record of driving innovations in mobility and partnering with leaders in the battery field. The company has a deep understanding of battery technologies and capabilities and perhaps the most exacting performance and quality standards in the space,” said David Eaglesham, CEO, Pellion Technologies. “We are delighted and honoured that they have chosen to invest in Pellion.”

“Our public safety and commercial customers have to keep their workers out in the field where they are needed, and where they are increasingly reliant on mobile technology that has to be powered and ready to use at all times,” said Motorola Solutions Chief Technology Officer Paul Steinberg. “While the promising battery technology developed by Pellion is still in the early stages of deployment, we believe it has exciting potential to substantially benefit our products and, ultimately, our customers.”

Pellion Technologies was founded by a team of MIT researchers leveraging high-throughput computational materials design to speed innovation in energy storage materials and chemistry. Magnesium enables higher energy density batteries than Li-ion through substantial capacity improvements at both cathode (two electrons per Mg-ion) and anode (metal). Despite decades of research, previous attempts to develop energy dense Mg batteries did not reach commercial scale.

Pellion claims a series of fundamental breakthroughs in materials, chemistry, and cell design. By combining these innovations, Pellion's demonstration devices now perform at energy densities over 1000Wh/L. Pellion is currently building test cells by the thousand and prototype cells up to the 2Ah capacity level.
